SUMMARY:PRSA-LA / AAJA-LA: Health Story Walk: Exploring Fitness\, Equity and Journalism
DESCRIPTION:Health Story Walk: Exploring Fitness\, Equity and Journalism\nUnique interactive morning brings together medical and fitness experts with journalists for a meaningful conversation on fitness inequity \nSunday\, Aug. 23; 9:00 am -12:00.pm \nBrookside Park\, 360 North Arroyo Boulevard Pasadena\, CA 91103 \nREGISTER HERE \nAbout this event\n\nJoin us for a unique interactive morning of movement\, conversation and learning as we explore the connections between fitness\, health equity and how the news shapes our understanding of wellness. \nThe event brings medical and fitness experts together with journalists as we walk along a 0.7-mile path at Brookside Park in Pasadena. We’ll make three pit stops and examine the role of fitness in self-care\, discuss barriers that prevent people from achieving their fitness goals\, and explore inequities in access to fitness and wellness resources. We’ll also dive into how journalists and storytellers can better cover health and fitness issues through a solutions-oriented lens. \nThe event will conclude with a fitness demonstration of how to use strength bands – which you will be taking home – for various mobility levels\, followed by lunch and networking. \nThis event is possible thanks to a grant from the California Endowment. \nRESERVE OUR SPOT TODAY \nTo attend\, grab a ticket for $10. The money will be refunded to you after you attend the event. No-shows will NOT be refunded. \nWhile this is a free event\, charging a refundable reservation fee helps guarantee attendance and prevent food waste. If the reservation fee is a hurdle for you to attend\, please email aajalalosangeles@gmail.com and AAJA-LA can help figure things out. \nMEET THE SPEAKERS \nHalee Mosley \nHalee Mosley is a NASM-certified personal trainer\, coach and broadcast journalist based in California. With a background in journalism and nearly a decade in the fitness industry\, she brings both reporting experience and firsthand experience working with clients to conversations surrounding health\, fitness and accessibility. \nDr. Joyce Javier \nDr. Joyce Javier is a community pediatrician and physician scientist who is a leader on Filipino health disparities research concentrating on youth suicide and depression prevention. She received her MD from the UC Irvine\, MPH from UC Berkeley\, and completed her pediatrics residency and academic general pediatrics fellowship at Stanford. She is an Associate Professor at the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine and President-elect for the Society for the Pediatric Research. \nHallie Jose \nHallie Jose is Los Angeles-based strength and performance coach dedicated to fostering holistic empowerment. Her goal is to empower the 360 athlete\, emphasizing the importance of not only taking care of your body but also your mind and spirit\, ultimately reaching your fullest potential. “I’ve always had a love for movement since I was young. I became a multi-sport athlete at the age of 5 and have always explored different ways to move outside of basketball.” Jose says. “What sport brought to me was so much more than the physical – it was the mental and spiritual confidence I developed with it.” \nEVENT DETAILS \nWelcome: This event is family friendly and dog friendly. The park has playgrounds and areas where dogs can play without a leash. During the event program\, we won’t be stopping at those locations\, but you are open to part take in the amenities before and after the program. Dogs will need to stay on leash during the walk and talk. \nHow to get there: Check out this map to find where to navigate when driving or taking public transit. The map also shows you where to meet for the event at the park and the walking path we will take when the event begins. \nDriving: Brookside Park has a large parking lot that is free. Use your GPS to navigate here. You should be able to find parking close to that location. You can then use the map to walk to the picnic shelter. \nPublic Transit: Take the Metro A Line to the Memorial Park Station in Pasadena\, then catch Pasadena Transit Route 51 or 51S to the Seco St & Arroyo Blvd stop. Then\, it’s a short walk to the park. Use the map to walk to the picnic shelter. \nEvent timing: Please arrive at 9 a.m. to check in and get settled. The event program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and concludes around 11:30 a.m. Lunch and networking will take place after until noon. \nWhat to wear: Plan to wear light\, breathable and comfortable clothes that account for walking and being outside. For shoes\, plan to wear comfortable shoes with thick soles. (NOTE: While sandals like Birkenstocks are comfortable\, they aren’t the best for walking.
