“How do I find a mentor?”
“I just moved here, any suggestions on how to best connect with other professionals?”
“I’m looking for a job and need to network, what’s the best way to do that?”
We receive many questions like these through our PRSA-LA email, phone and social channels. Since those asking are apparently aware of PRSA-LA, one would hope that they are already aware of chapter events and the ability to network there.
While general networking is important, it can’t replace the support one gets from cultivating deeper connections and friendships with other professionals. In fact, I would argue that for most of us, deeper connections are foundational and necessary to be effective at general networking. A new acquaintance is more likely to become an old friend if you know people in common.
One of the best ways to develop deeper contacts with other communications professionals is to volunteer with your local PRSA-LA chapter-before you roll your eyes thinking this is a solicitation for help, hear me out. Working alongside other pros is a great way to get to know people better and develop lifelong connections. It’s also a good way to hone your skills and watch other pros in action.
I would encourage you to seek out volunteer opportunities that entail an element of teamwork. It can be as simple as volunteering once a year for Quality-Time, where you partner with two other pros to give advice to a non-profit. For even better connections, consider serving on the PRSA-LA board. Board service starts at the committee level, which is open to anyone regardless of your experience.
On a committee, you work with a team on developing and implementing strategies such as attracting new members, creating and promoting events, broadening awareness through social media, and much, much more. It can be a lot of work, true, but it’s rewarding. Plus you’ll develop new friendships and connections, beef up your resume, and learn a lot in the process.
