PRSA-LA Chapter members Sheena Tahilramani and Denise Gitsham, principals of the Pasadena-based firm 7 Second Strategies, recently published an article in Fast Company entitled, “Why PR is Critical for Your Startup’s Success.”
Tahilramani and Gitsham use the occasion to advise entrepreneurs on the value of public relations to their early efforts. Suggesting that business pioneers “identify the essentials,” the authors caution against following the advice of an earlier Fast Company article (“Why Your Startup Shouldn’t Hire a PR Firm”)––which recommended that entrepreneurs take a DIY approach.
“Establishing brand voice takes more work than you think and more time than you have,” Tahilramani and Gitsham warn in the piece, adding that “if you don’t actively tell your story, someone else will actively tell it for you.”
The implication is that entrepreneurs are better off doing what they’re best at––raising capital and pioneering great new products and services––and that their efforts at self-promotion are at best ineffective and at worst a deadly misallocation of resources.
