April marks National Diversity Month. I’m compelled to address the backlash we are seeing against Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) programs across the country. Despite strides to be more inclusive, especially within the PR industry, systemic inequalities persist, making DEI efforts more crucial than ever.
I continue to hear from some corporate and agency leaders, “We have tried, but we just can’t find qualified senior-level executives who are from diverse backgrounds.” My answer to that is, you’re not trying hard enough.
Here are 3 ways you can diversify your team:
- Advertise the job position with ethnic PR and Marketing organizations. Many of them have job boards on their websites. Some to consider: National Hispanic Public Relations Association, Black PR Society, VOICES: Asian American and Pacific Islanders in Communications
- Sponsor networking events or awards programs with these diverse PR associations and PRSA-LA and most importantly, attend. Make connections. Meet the people who can guide you in your effort.
- To find a candidate, look outside the world of PR agencies and Corporate Comm departments. Consider foundations, elected officials and their staff, academia, and nonprofits.
In our divisive political climate, DEI initiatives are not just symbolic but strategic. Dismantling or dismissing DEI programs would exacerbate existing disparities and hinder societal progress.
As public relations professionals, we play a vital role in advancing DEI. We must use our platforms to amplify marginalized voices, challenge injustices, and advocate for inclusive policies.
Let’s not waver in our commitment to DEI. Instead, let’s unite in support of these programs, recognizing their essential role in shaping a more just and inclusive society.
Together, we can drive positive change and create a future where diversity is celebrated, equity is upheld, and inclusion is embraced by all.
