Recognizing and Addressing the Undetected Crisis: Unconscious Bias and the PR Practitioner
June 28, 2016 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
With special guest speaker:
Hugo Balta
ESPN Digital and Print Media
“We’re not prejudiced” is a common sentiment reflected by those suddenly facing a PR crisis around unequal treatment. From police departments to corporations, organizations can be seemingly blind to developing issues within their own ranks.
While outright prejudice and stereotyping are problems PR practitioners look for, often the greatest threat is easily overlooked: unconscious bias. Unconscious biases are prejudices people have, but are unaware of; they are subconscious mental shortcuts based on past experiences and beliefs. Most important: we all have them.
On June 28, 2016, PRSA-LA presents “Recognizing and Addressing the Undetected Crisis: Unconscious Bias and the PR Practitioner,” featuring keynote speaker Hugo Balta, the senior director of multicultural content for ESPN Digital and Print Media. Mr. Balta a national thought leader in “unconscious bias” will discuss how to identify and address it proactively. A champion of fair treatment, Mr. Balta is a past president and lifetime member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and is on the business advisory board of the National Hispanic Media Coalition.
Come learn more about unconscious bias and how it could be impacting the organizations you represent.
